When a Photograph is a Work of Art

Under French law, photographs are considered works of art as “photographs whose proofs are executed either by the artist, or under his control or that of his successors in title, and are signed by the artist or authenticated by himself or his successors in title, and numbered within the limit of thirty copies in all formats and media. All posthumous prints must be legibly marked as such on the back. (decree no. 95-172 of February 17, 1995).

So, to put it simply: all photographs taken by the artist, printed by him or under his control, signed and numbered up to a limit of thirty copies, all formats and media combined.

This type of “art” or “original” print is in contrast to the reproduction print. The latter is not considered a work of art. It is a commercial product with an unlimited edition, signed and numbered. These are known as “unlimited prints” and do not have the same value, but they do have the advantage of being sold at reduced prices.

In my case, all the art photographs exhibited are produced in limited editions, signed and numbered to a maximum of 5 or 10 copies in all formats.

Signature and stamping

As in “traditional” art, the signature on the piece (whether unique or limited edition) is of the utmost importance. An original must include the artist’s signature, date and edition of the print.

My photographs are signed and stamped on the back to leave the photograph intact.

You’ll also find a hologram label of this type can be neither scanned nor photographed: it can therefore not be fraudulently reproduced, which in principle guarantees its inviolability.

What guarantees that you're buying a fine art photograph?

A certificate of authenticity is required to establish that a work of art is genuine and has been created by the artist selling it. To be valid, the certificate of authenticity must include several compulsory details.

All my purchased works of art will be delivered with a secure certificate of authenticity (registered certificate number and QR code for traceability) and security labels.

The certificate of authenticity is printed on numbered, secure A4 paper with 15 levels of security, making it completely forgery-proof and non-reproducible.

The certificate also includes the photograph's title, which always tells a story that may be intertwined with the one you see behind the photograph.

I'd be happy to discuss this with you if you like!

What printing technique do I use for my fine art prints?

Photos are printed on finest art paper specially designed for fine art, using natural pigment inks.

The fine art papers I prefer are Hahnemühle Photo Rag® 308 g/m² and Canson® Infinity Rag Photographique 310 g/m².

Both papers are museum-quality 100% cotton for digital art publishing and photography, with a smooth surface and matte finish.

The combination of extremely pure fine art papers, characteristic surface structures and various high-quality inkjet coatings guarantees extraordinary print results with brilliant colors, deep blacks, perfect rendering of contrasts and details, and captivating image depth.

With the guarantee of excellent conservation (over 100 years), inkjet media from the Digital FineArt collection are ideal for FineArt applications such as high-quality FineArt prints, editions, long-term exhibitions and art collections.
